If you’re subscribed to the podcast, you might’ve noticed there’s an extra bonus episode popping up at the moment.
We’re doing a new podcast in these crazy times as in-person events aren’t able to go ahead for the time being due to COVID-19.
Each Monday we’ll have an expert from a different cropping region to provide a regional weeds-focused update.
Dr Stephen Yates – 3/08/2020
On this Regional Update, CSIRO Agriculture’s Dr Stephen Yeates is taking us all the way up north to the Burdekin to give a Northern Regional Update.
Steve has been working on a GRDC invested project in this area and will reveal some of the key outcomes. He also gives an insight into the farming systems in this region and how best to keep on top of weeds.
David Kingston – 27/07/2020
David Kingston is a mixed farmer from The Rock in southern New South Wales. He farms with his brother and they’re making decisions on their farm on how to get on top of glyphosate resistant ryegrass. His brother recently attended a workshop in Temora which was put on by Farmlink and the GRDC which delved deeper into glyphosate resistance. David and his brother have made some big changes in response to the ryegrass problem they’re facing and he shares their experience with us on the podcast today.
Andrew Storrie – 20/07/2020
Today on the Regional Update podcast, we are going to be getting the details on the 2020 Summer Weed Survey of WA Cropping districts, which GRDC invested in. Between January and April this year, 197 paddocks were surveyed to assess for what weeds were present to provide a detailed insight into the trends in Summer weed emergence. We’re going to be chatting with Andrew Storrie, also known as AGRONOMO, to find out more.
In this podcast, Andrew talks about the importance of killing weeds when they’re small, particularly for Summer weeds as they can be harder to kill once they get bigger. Check out the updated GRDC broadacre cropping weeds ute guide here to help you identify weeds at all growth stages here.
Paul McIntosh – 13/07/2020
Today on the Regional Update Podcast, we’re catching up with our WeedSmart Northern Extension Agronomist, Paul McIntosh. Paul is going to give us some pointers on what to be mindful of with summer planting in the Northern region.

Alex Douglas – 29/06/2020
On today’s Regional Update Podcast, we focus on the weed Matricaria, which has been a growing concern in Western Australia’s eastern Wheatbelt since it first emerged the late 1960s.
Matricaria has spread to neighbouring regions and developed into a weed of serious concern for growers, particularly those in the Geraldton and Kwinana port zones. Alex Douglas from DPIRD joins us to explain how to identify and control this weed.
You can find further information on this weed by checking out this GRDC Paddock Practices article here.
Alex Douglas also has written a Grains Research Update paper on Matricaria which you read here.

On this week’s Regional Update we’re zoning-in on Central Queensland, with Rolleston grower, Kurt Mayne. You might remember Kurt from his involvement at Emerald WeedSmart Week in 2019 and previous podcast appearances. Kurt gives us an overview of weeds causing issues in his region and how best to deal with them.
Chris Pinkney – 15/06/2020
Today on the Regional Update we’re catching up Geraldton based consultant, Chris Pinkney. Chris is one of the Directors of Agrarian Management. His area got hit pretty hard recently by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Mangga colliding with a cold front which saw winds rip through the region, blowing away valuable topsoil from farmland in the process. We’ll find out about those seasonal conditions and get some tips on keeping on top of weeds specific to this region.
Anthony Lee – 08/06/2020
On this Regional Update podcast, we get an update on Central Queensland from Nutrien Ag Agronomist, Anthony Lee, based in Clermont.
Lisette Mill – 01/06/2020
Today on the Regional Update, we mix it up a bit by focusing on a problematic weed in the Basalt to Bay region – gorse weed. The seed of this weed can last over 50 years and can cause havoc for farmers as it is difficult to get control of and also can acidify the soil it grows in. Basalt to Bay Landcare Project Manager, Lisette Mill runs a project to control this weed in the region. She talks about some handy resources at the end of the podcast too – you can find those here.
